Why We Built Versbloom (And Who It’s Really For)

Every gay guy we know has the same graveyard on his phone: three or four dating apps he opens out of habit and closes out of frustration. Download, browse, sigh, repeat. So when we said we were building another one, even our friends rolled their eyes. Fair enough. The last thing the world needs is one more grid of torsos that goes nowhere.

But that’s exactly why we built Versbloom. Not to add to the pile — to fix the thing the pile keeps getting wrong.

The problem was never a shortage of apps.

It was that the apps stopped being about who’s actually near you. Open most of them and you’re looking at a wall of profiles sorted by everything except distance — boosted accounts, paying members, guys the algorithm wants you to see. You scroll for ten minutes and realize the “nearby” guy at the top is a paid placement two cities away, while the one who’s genuinely around the corner is buried on page nine.

We got tired of that. So we started with one rule: proximity comes first. When you open Versbloom, the map shows you who’s close, right now, in order of how close they really are. No boosted strangers jumping the line. The guy three streets over should be the easiest guy to find — not the hardest.

Real, near, and ready — in that order.

The other stuff you hate, we hated too. The bots that message “hey” and then try to sell you a webcam link. The dead profiles that haven’t logged in since 2022 but still clutter the grid. The paywalls slapped on basic things like seeing who viewed you. We build against all of it, because none of it helps two guys actually meet — and “do two guys actually meet” is the only question we care about.

Labels optional. Always.

Here’s the part that’s in our name. A lot of apps make you pick a lane before you’ve even said hello — top, bottom, and a checkbox that quietly decides who sees you. But plenty of us don’t fit one box, and plenty of us are still working it out. Versbloom is built for the guy who’s vers, the guy who’s a side, the guy who’s “depends on the night,” and the guy who just doesn’t feel like announcing it to a grid. Say as much or as little as you want. The connection matters more than the category.

Who it’s for.

City guys drowning in options who want the noise cut down to the ones who are close and real. Small-town and suburban guys the big apps treat like they don’t exist, staring at an empty map because the platform never bothered to grow there. Gay, bi, curious, trans — if you’re an adult looking for other guys nearby, you’re who we built this for. We didn’t design Versbloom for a demographic. We designed it for a Friday night, a phone, and the hope that someone good is closer than you think.

We used the competition before we replaced it.

Every one of us spent months on the other apps — not casually, but taking notes. Where the friction was. Where the fakes slipped through. The exact moment the app made you pay to do something that should have been free. All of it went into a list, and the list became Versbloom. We’re not pretending we nailed everything on day one; no platform does. But every call we make runs through the same filter: does this get you closer to a real guy, faster? If not, it’s gone.

Stop reading. Start browsing.

Honestly, the best thing we can tell you is to close this tab and open the map. Set up a profile in about a minute, see who’s around, and get a feel for it. It’s free, it’s quick, and nobody’s locking you into anything. If it’s not your thing, no hard feelings.

But we think you’ll be surprised who’s already nearby — probably reading something just like this and hoping you show up.

Come see who’s close. Join Versbloom today →
